Story

We've been training since September for the DW canoe marathon; this 125 mile race will take place over the easter weekend, beginning on the 19th April in Devizes, and finishing on the 22nd under Westminster Bridge, in London. Following the Kennet and Avon Canal through the countryside, we will join the Thames River in Reading, paddling around 35 miles a day and camping at local sites each night, we have linked a photo below, of the course, if you are interested. In preparation for the DW, we will be participating in the Waterside Series, a set of four races increasing in distance, over the course of eight weeks. Alice and Nina will be paddling together in their boat, 'ROXY', whilst Holly and Cami will be competing in their boat, 'TALISKER’.

We have decided to choose this charity, in honour of one of our closest friends, Melissa Bowyer-Knight. Melissa's father, a funny, generous and kind man, reflected in the bubbliness of Melissa, sadly passed away last year. We hope that by raising this money, not only can we support the Bowyer-Knight family, but also support the lives of many people diagnosed with a blood cancer or disorder.

Every day, Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with a blood cancer or blood disorder. They do this by matching incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells to people who desperately need a lifesaving transplant, along with this they specialise in Bone Marrow transplant. The institute is solving the three main problems in transplantation: Graft vs Host Disease, which is caused by differences in human leucocyte antigens; viral infection; and the separation of GVHD from the effect. They also carry out cutting edge scientific research, fund specialist post-transplant nurses and support patients and their families through the transplant process and beyond. They won’t stop until they save the lives of everyone who needs a stem cell transplant. Every penny you donate brings them closer to that day.

The DW is said to be the toughest mental and physical event open for teenagers, and having never done anything like this before it will really test our abilities and we hope to raise money for a cause so close to our hearts. Please help us achieve our goal; every penny helps!

If you live close or are around, we would be thoroughly appreciative of your support, especially Nina, who celebrates her birthday on the 21st of April, in the middle of the DW.

THANK YOU!

All four of us amazingly finished the race the day before last and are now recovering whilst at school. It was a tough battle throughout the whole race, especially on the second day, from Newbury to Marlow, however we were so happy to see so many familiar faces along the course. The experience is one we will never forget, and are so happy to have been able to take part in this challenge together as a team. Our support crews were truly amazing and we couldn't have managed it without them.

Yesterday we completed the penultimate 25mile long waterside race. Alice and Nina finished in 5:01:57, and Cami and Holly completed the course in 4:29:55, having to run 2 miles with the boat due to a broken rudder. We’re all really relieved to have completed this race!!

Last Sunday morning we completed the first of the waterside series races a 13 mile course. It was a new experience for us as we have never peddled alongside anyone other than those in our team. We were all very happy with our times and are training hard for the race on the 9th
